The wolfberry plant species is a deciduous woody perennial plant that grows up to 3 m in height. The chinense variety of the wolfberry plant grows in the south of China and can be shorter than the barbarum variety of the wolfberry. The barbarum chinese wolfberry plant grows in the north, mostly in the Ningxia region and can grow taller than the chinense Chinese wolfberry.
Chinese Wolfberry Plant Leaves, Flowers and Fruit
Wolfberries grow on the shoot in a staggered arrangement or in bundles of up to three with each leaf in a spearhead or oval shape. The wolfberry leaf can have a blunt or round tip.
The wolfberry plant bears one to three flowers with lavender or light purple petals.
In the northern hemisphere, the wolfberry flowers from June through September and berry mature from August to October.
Fruit from the wolfberry plant is a bright orange red berry that is about 1-2cm long. Seeds in the wolfberry plant can vary in number depending on the size of the wolfberry and may contain 10-60 tiny yellow seeds.
